Gansu Focuses on Building an Internationally Influential Yellow River Cultural Tourism Belt
In recent years, Gansu Province has thoroughly implemented the important directives of General Secretary Xi Jinping on ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin, as well as comprehensively advanced the spirit of the symposium on promoting ecological conservation and high-quality development across the Yellow River Basin. The province has prioritized strengthening research and interpretation of Yellow River culture, revitalizing cultural heritage utilization, and enhancing cultural exchanges. Efforts have been made to preserve the cultural roots of the Yellow River, narrate Gansu's Yellow River stories in the new era, and collectively elevate the protection, inheritance, and promotion of Yellow River culture. This has laid the foundation for building an internationally influential Yellow River cultural tourism belt. In 2024, Gansu Province welcomed 451 million tourist visits, generating tourism revenue of 345.2 billion yuan, representing increases of 20.6% and 28.8% respectively compared to 2019.

The province has enacted and implemented key regulations including the "Gansu Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Regulations", "Gansu Provincial Red Culture Resources Protection and Inheritance Regulations", and "Gansu Provincial Long Opera Protection and Inheritance Regulations". Significant research projects like "Study on the Protection, Inheritance and Promotion of Yellow River Culture in Gansu" have been completed. China has implemented the Chinese Civilization Exploration Project and major initiatives under the "Archaeological China" program, advancing nearly 20 proactive archaeological excavation projects. Key achievements include the incorporation of the Turghut royal tombs from the Tang Dynasty in Wuwei and the Gedachuan site in Zhangjiachuan into the "Archaeological China" program. The Sijiaoping site in Lixian County was recognized as one of the "2023 Top Ten National Archaeological Discoveries" and featured among Gansu Province’s top news stories of 2024, offering fresh evidence for tracing the origins of Chinese civilization. Under the Yellow River Heritage Conservation and Utilization Plan, 227 cultural preservation projects along the Yellow River basin—including the Maijishan Grottoes and the Wuquanshan Ancient Architectural Complex—along with six memorial hall renovation projects have been successfully completed. This progress has allowed the province to surpass national targets ahead of schedule, achieving a 90% public access rate for provincially and nationally protected cultural heritage sites by 2023, far earlier than the 2030 goal. Additionally, the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Brand Revitalization Plan has been launched, featuring the establishment of an ICH database, two provincial-level cultural ecological conservation zones, and one national ICH production-based preservation demonstration base. Two national ICH-themed tourism routes were unveiled, enabling comprehensive regional protection and dynamic inheritance of Yellow River cultural heritage.
