South Africa is considering easing travel restrictions to increase tourist arrivals from China and India, a senior government official said Thursday.

Deputy Minister of Tourism Maggie Sotyu made the remarks in North West Province while speaking at the Tourism Leadership Conference 2024, organized by the Tourism Business Council of South Africa.

"China and India can potentially increase the number of arrivals to South Africa, contribute to the economy, and provide opportunities for small businesses. Both Chinese and Indian tourists are among the top spenders across the globe," said Sotyu.

The Department of Home Affairs recently announced that they will start accepting group applications from China and India, adding that a team of experienced individuals is in place to process their applications fast.

"Both countries have large populations and are part of the leading outbound markets. These two countries have strong political ties and significant trade relations with South Africa. The department is very eager to support these initiatives that facilitate ease of access," said Sotyu.

South Africa's Department of Home Affairs announced the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme on Sept. 2 to boost tourism from China and India, which is set to be implemented in January 2025.
